Fall is busy at SGO

Thanksgiving is next week and we are busy. This fall we are doing a lot of cabinet glass. Traditional bevels continue to be the most popular for cabinets in our area but we are also doing some contemporary designs as well. These designs will be brought to life over the next couple of weeks. If you visit our studio you'll see some new displays for cabinet glass as well.

What are our customers looking for in cabinet glass? Cabinet glass covers a wide range. Our speciality is SGO Glass. This process let's us do some exciting designs as with the photo above. Unlike cutglass or stained glass - the SGO GLass process let's us "float" objects - or lead without connecting the lines.

Synagogue Donor Wall installation

We finished the installation of the new Donor Wall for Temple Olam Tikvah in Fairfax, VA.

The art committee selected a carved glass centerpiece for the Donor Wall which is prominently hung in the foyer of the new addition to the Synagogue. Bright Golds and Silver, with a gradient red flame shoot up from the base of the piece. The design is by Jeanette Kuvin Oren, a prominent Judaic artist. For the donor names, we decided to use local fused glass artist, Nadine Beth Schneider of Ashburn, VA. Nadine fused pieces of Spectrum glass into shapes that complement the contures of the center carved glass piece.

Solid Glass Backsplash - adds a touch of color

Solid glass backsplashes for ktichen and bath remodels are making a splash in the US now. According to Decorative Glass Magazine, new developments and technologies in glass are helping designers to use glass to bring color into their projects. Is it real or Faux?

We recently completed an interesting project where the client wanted to use mirror to create the illusion of transoms in a large, high ceiling foyer.   Using our Antique Mirror product, leading and some gold film, we were able to build two quite beautiful faux transoms. By using Antique Mirror instead of regular mirror we were able to give the look of stained glass.

The client is very happy with the outcome.

How did we do it?

We started by picking the Antique Mirror that best matched the colors in the home. This mirror product is a chemically "antiqued" mirror and comes in a variety of colors depnding on the chemical used to create the reaction. This one has a copper tone to it. Next we made a template for the size and shape we wanted. Then we leaded the glass with a satin antique lead using two widths - 3/16" and 3/8". We used a transparent gold SGO film to add interest to the leading.

The mirror is 1/8" and was attached to the wall above the opening with a mirror mastic. A flexible moulding products was then curved around the mirror onsite and nailed to the wall.

The final step was to paint the moulding to match the existing trim and Viola! Faux Transoms.
